Luther started as a Porter on the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway and was promoted to Timekeeper. This was clearly a prestigious post with a salary 4 to 5 times higher than an engine driver. In 1871 he was a porter at Brighton railway station on £46 16s a year or 18s a week. In Feb 1874 he had been promoted to Timekeeper and removed from Brighton on a salary of 22s per week. In Nov 1874 his salary increased to 24s per week and he is now in New Cross station, Greenwich. In Jun 1876 his salary increased to 26s per week. In Dec 1787 his salary is still 26s per week. In Apr 1878 his salary increased to 28s per week In Dec 1880 his salary increased to 30s a week. In dec 1881 his salary had remained at 30s per week. In Dec 1888 his salary increased to 32s per week. In Dec 1891 his salary was still 32s per week. In Aug 1892 his salary increased to 34s per week. In Jan 1896 his salary increased to 36s per week.
